Live at Lunch – Adapting work in lockdown

Today, Christie O’Carroll, Director of Engage at Reading Rep, will be joined by:

Kelly Burke (writer / actor)

Uk based, American actress and playwright, Kelly Burke is an experienced film and stage actor who has worked extensively in the US and UK, including performing her own pieces – Zelda (West End) and Love for Sale (Off Broadway) – to critical acclaim.

Kelly Burke’s original play, first staged in February as a solo performance at Shakespeare’s Globe, has been adapted as an audio drama for Reading Fringe Digital. Natalie Barney’s Last Salon explores the sensational life of the Parisian-based American icon whose legendary literary salon gave birth to Modernism, and whose Sapphic affairs scandalised polite society.

Helen Eastman (writer / director)

Helen has written and directed a number of family shows, including In The Night Garden Live, Bing live, Bicycle Boy which came to Reading Fringe Festival 2018, and Alby The Penguin Saves Christmas, hosted by Reading Rep in 2017. As well as family work, Helen’s career has spanned theatre, opera and occasionally circus. Helen is artistic associate of the APGRD at the University of Oxford, and has recently been visiting fellow and guest artist at the Peter Wall Institute, University of British Columbia. She is a visiting lecturer in playwriting at Westminster University. She founded the Live Canon ensemble and has created over one
hundred poetry shows, pop-ups and interventions with the company at venues from Abbey Road to Broadway.

Helen is writer / director of this year’s family commission, Pip and Pearl: Planet Protectors, an interactive adventure for 7-11 year olds.
