Diwali: Festival of Light

Reading community and schools project

Reading Museum and The Museum of English Rural Life have been working in partnership with Kala the Arts, a leading dance organisation that specialises in the Odissi South Asian dance form, to develop an incredible school project throughout 2020.

As part of this project 3 local schools engaged in online dance workshops learning about Diwali and Odissi traditions. The culmination of this project takes place in the Abbey Ruins, a site used for many seasonal celebrations and is transformed through ‘Diwali: the Festival of Light’.

Kala the Arts are also sharing Diwali arts and cultural heritage as part of the MERL Late GLOW on 19th November, which is part of the Being Human Festival.

Dancers, musicians and community performers will share the story of Rama and Sita, the origin of Diwali through performance and song.
