Digital Advent Calendar – Door 22: The Mayor of Reading Rows the Santa Run!

“I’m delighted to announce that before lockdown restrictions changed, I completed the Virtual Reading Santa Run 2020 to raise money for Reading Rotary Club & my chosen charities – No. 5 Young People, Royal British Legion, Royal Navy & Marines Charity & Friends of Reading Abbey. Rather than running I donned a Santa hat & completed a 5K Row on the River Thames, accompanied by my children and Andy from Reading Rowing Club.”

– Mayor of Reading Councillor David Stevens

This is the 7th Santa Run organised by Reading Rotary Club and it’s not too late to take part. Details at

Raising money with a Santa Row for:

No 5 Young People

This Reading based charity offers a confidential listening to support children and young people, and those around them. It provides a free counselling service for those aged 11-25 living, working or studying in Reading and the RG postcode area.  Its excellent services have been in particularly high demand during the pandemic.

Royal British Legion and Royal Navy & Marines Charity

Having served in the Royal Navy for nearly 10 years and knowing people still serving in the armed forces, the Mayor is keen to support these two military charities whose fund-raising efforts have been severely affected by the pandemic.

Friends of Reading Abbey

The friends were established to promote awareness of the Abbey’s importance, to encourage interest in and understanding of its history & architecture, and to support the preservation of the ruins. In 2021 they will commemorate the 900th anniversary of the foundation of the Abbey. The Mayor of Reading is a patron of the Friends & he has supported them during the year by recording a series of talks about the Abbey.
